Alright, well this story was…interesting to say the least. People around the world are constantly followed by financial issues, and when i come to read a book i want to get away from the problems of everyday life, i want to live the fantasy life in my reading.

I did not enjoy reading this story because of the fact that every situation is controlled by the families lack of money. This problem is finally fixed at the very end of the story. From the time it was fixed i enjoyed the book…for 2 reasons, one because they started to live a happier life; and two because the book was almost finished lol.

Throughout this story Nathan and Rukmani have a terrible time keeping up with feeding their family and paying off their bills and or debt. This mind set ,to keep struggling,  just does not work for me. If you have a job and it is not putting out the correct amount of money for your family to sustain life healthily, then something needs to be done. I can understand that in the past (when this story takes place) People take pride in their businesses and that the people sometimes have no choice but to follow in their families footsteps; but sometimes things need to be done so that you can give your family a healthy way of life.

In today’s society there are multiple things people do, either get a better job, get multiple jobs, or work more. Since Nathan and Rukmani lived and worked on a farm, they almost had no options, all they could really do is abandon their current lifestyle for another. They actually did this at the end of the story, both Rukmani and Nathan traded their lives on the farm to go into the city and work in a quarry. This is where they make their comeback. Once they were recuperated and paid off their debts, they were ready to move back home and continue on with their lives.

In all reality, this story was alright but it wasn’t the type of book i like to read. I love fantasy novels, i like it when a character does something that is totally and completely impossible for a normal person like myself to accomplish. This story was a realistic fiction, everything in this book could very well happen to someone in this world. And to me that is kind of boring. Why do we watch movies? To see things that we may never experience in our lives (good things). I want this to be the same for my books.

My best entry was probably the third one…i tried really hard on the second and third ones. I forgot to do a lot of the blogs so i don’t have a whole lot to choose from.

My least favorite entry was probably the  second one, simply because  i hate homework and that was the first blog i did that was at home. I despise homework.

The photostory was probably the most effective post. I liked it because it has a lot of information in it.

I didn’t really read anyone els’s blog so i can’t really answer part of this question. but with mine…i learned what i had already read….

638px-two_young_german_soldiers.jpg

whoops forgot the picture lol. well here it is.

as you look closely at this picture you can see that the soldier that had already been dead in the picture must have been reading the bible before he died. you can see it laying on the ground just inches form his left hand. That is extremely sad, i am very religious, so this sort of thing impacts me greatly. That little detail just makes this picture that much more meaningful of how desperate the soldiers were.

After i typed the last post i started to think of what kind of things the soldiers saw that made them loose their personality, so i went on google and started reading some articles and stuff. Well i ended up coming to this picture, which is a picture of 2 young german soldiers, one of which who had been shot and killed (bottom) and another who had been shot in the left thigh and had collapsed. Imagine if this was you, it would be incredibly scary to see a buddy of yours shot dead and then have you be stranded in the middle of no where with a potentially fatal wound. scary stuff.

k well, i guess the voki thing isn’t working. jim tried to help me but im just lazy.

turns out i have to post to get a grade so, for my grade’s sake…here it goes.

So far i’ve only read 4 chapters, and it wasn’t exactly as gory as i had hoped. Sure there are some backflashes to scenes and such but nothing like i was looking forward to. Other than that there really isn’t much to complain about. This book is filled with description and deep thoughts of the characters. Its enjoyable to read but, its too bad that I’d rather take 3 of mrs. minsers math tests than read. I guess i can make the best out of it but…haha yeah.

I get side-tracked easily so, back to the book.

One of the main characters Paul Baumer seems to be like a quite, vacant person….If i were to imagine him, or know him before he went to war (in writing of course lol) I’m sure he would have been similar to me, talkative and outgoing. i just think that his war experience made him loose those qualities. i know war leaves people less than themselves but i would never think it could totally rip a character of its personality. that would suck…haha

chapter two

April 24th, 2008 by · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

First of all, kemmerich was one of the characters in chapter 1. he was injured pretty badly in battle, he ended up loosing his leg due to amputation. They were all scared about infection and in how the infection could kill him very easily in his weakened state. A few days later he did die, it wasn’t through infection, but it was just that his body could not sustain life with all his injuries.

The other soldiers who are to be released to go home seem to be excited. The older soldiers were much more excited that the younger soldiers. This is basically because of 1 reason, The older soldiers have either wives, kids, or jobs to go back to. It is exciting for them to get back to their care free lives. On the other hand, the younger soldiers have nothing to go back to. they were just getting into an individual state of their lives, most were just getting a steady job, or their own house/apartment. For several months or even years all they have known is war, so it is very hard for them to just jump back into their lives.

anyway, the chapter ended with kemmerich dieing. I’m enjoying this book quite a lot. Its more of a manly book lol, it has war ,and, guns and, dieing in it. All those other books i’ve read this year are just words.

k well i bought the book, but i didn’t post last week. i was just lazy on the weekend.

so before i read, i have to say….i want this to be a good war novel. we’ll see…

I was pleasantly surprised with the first chapter. It was fairly interesting because it told of most of the main characters. It told of how all of them are survivors of being on the front lines for three weeks. Their regiment left with 150 strong and able men, only 80 or so survived. There was only 1 problem, they were all mentally distressed or shell-shocked. Most of the other men have similar problems but to different levels. Some of the men have been so distressed that they are deemed insane. Every little noise may set them off.  Kemmerich is one of the men who was badly injured in battle. He suffered a bad injury to his upper leg or thigh area. He is not aware of this but his leg had to be amputated. To me this seems very sad because if i had a surgery to take off a limb of mine, i would like to know about it so i can get my self prepared mentally. The chapter ends with some of the men bribing the doctor with cigarrets to make him give morphine to ease his pain. I thought this was cool…He has some good friends apparently.

well, i guess its time to read chapter 2 now….
